Double delight for translation firm at West Midlands Tech Awards 2022

Story 1

A firm which provides interpreting and translation services in more than 350 languages and dialects to clients across the region and beyond was named a double winner at our West Midlands Tech Awards 2022.

Word360 was crowned top Established Tech Business while co-founder Kavita Parmar was named West Midlands Woman in Tech at the awards ceremony held in Birmingham last night.

The company works with public, private and not-for-profit organisations to help them deliver access to their services through its own tech platform, meaning languages can be accessed at any time and anywhere.

The West Midlands Tech Awards celebrated achievement by both individuals and companies across ten different categories

What's on...because it's not all work, work, work

Story 2

If you haven't yet been to a Christmas pantomime then fear not as there are still plenty of these (and other shows) taking place in the coming weeks, perfectly timed as schools start to close for the festive break.

Our sister site BirminghamLive has created a handy guide to what's on at venues across the West Midlands including at the Hippodrome in Birmingham, Wolverhampton Grand, Malvern Theatres and Resorts World Arena in Solihull.

Among the shows are Dick Whittington, Aladdin and candlelit concerts - find out more about what's on here.

Just when you thought Birmingham's busy Jewellery Quarter couldn't accommodate any more bars, another one is opening in the historic manufacturing district.

Called Tabu Bar & Restaurant, it is launching today in an underground unit and will serve Asian cuisine and have live entertainment. Owners say the venue in Newhall Hill is inspired by the speakeasy scene of 1920s New York.

Staying with bars, one quirky venue in Birmingham has just celebrated its first anniversary. AutoBrew is a self-serve bar where you have to, erm, serve yourself from its range of beer taps bolted to the wall.

It's the boozing equivalent of the supermarket self-checkout but has obviously proved a hit with punters as the Custard Factory venue has held up well against the impact of the tram extension in Digbeth and is even launching self-serve wine and spirits too.

The week ahead

The final full working week of 2022 will sadly end with more rail strikes as people attempt to make the getaway for the long Christmas weekend unless the unions can reach an agreement with rail operators.

On the stock markets, there will be financial results from Redx Pharma2, Technology Minerals, Abingdon Health and Gulf Investment Fund.

And finally...

Story 3

Birmingham can lay claim to a pretty rich and fulsome cultural heritage, in particular when it comes to the UK music scene. The city's old Rum Runner nightclub was known as a great place for up-and-coming bands to cut their teeth and one of the city's most famous exports, Duran Duran, can attest to that.

A mock up of it was even featured in the closing ceremony of this year's Commonwealth Games. A blue plaque has now been unveiled at the site, part of which was converted into new offices last year, to mark the significance of its location off Broad Street.
