MONDAY Evergrande back in court Hong Kong's High Court will hear a winding-up petition for troubled Chinese property developer Evergrande Group. In December, lawyers representing the company put forward a new restructuring proposal, with the court urging Evergrande to work with creditors. Marcos to Vietnam Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. embarks on his first state visit to Vietnam, in a bid to solidify relations between the two Southeast Asian neighbors. Both nations share maritime claims in the contested South China Sea, an area facing frequent security challenges from Beijing. The two countries are expected to sign an agreement on beefing up maritime cooperation in the face of rising tensions. They are also set to sign an agreement on rice trade that would help the Philippines address supply concerns in times of crisis. Move Forward faces lese-majeste court verdict Thailand's Constitutional Court will rule on another case against opposition lawmaker Pita Limjaroenrat and his Move Forward Party. The complaint accuses the party of seeking to overthrow Thailand's system of constitutional monarchy through its signature policy of amending laws that criminalize royal insult. The court last week cleared Pita in a media shares case and reinstated him as a lawmaker, but legal experts say Wednesday's ruling could lead to the party's dissolution and a ban from political activity for Pita. GDP: Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan Earnings: Samsung Electronics THURSDAY India national budget Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present an interim national budget just ahead of the country's general elections due in April-May. A full-fledged annual budget for the financial year starting in April will be unveiled once a new government is installed. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party is widely expected to win its third straight five-year term, the interim budget is likely to strike a fine balance between populist measures and fiscal prudence. Myanmar military takeover anniversary Feb. 1 marks the third anniversary of the Myanmar military seizing power and detaining elected national leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Since October, resistance forces have intensified attacks on military bases and outposts, while the military has hit back with airstrikes and artillery barrages. Clashes have spread throughout the country, including in Shan state in the north, Kayah state in the east, and Rakhine state in the west. A state of emergency that has already been extended four times expires at the end of January, but will possibly be renewed.
