My Personal History: Former Bank of Japan Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda

"It was bound to be difficult, but someone had to overcome deflation. This appointment was my calling, I thought."   So writes Haruhiko Kuroda, who completed his 10-year term as governor of the Bank of Japan in April 2023.   While working in international finance and taxation, he faced the "Nixon Shock," the oil crises of 1973 and 1979, and the bursting of Japan's "bubble economy." After serving as vice minister of finance for international affairs, and later as the president of the Asian Development Bank, Kuroda was hand-picked by then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to become governor of the BOJ in 2013.   As central bank chief, his bold monetary easing lifted the sense of stagnation that had weighed on Japan, which had been mired in deflation for 15 years.   In a 29-part series, we will bring you stories -- in Kuroda's own words -- from his more than half a century of experience in the policy field.
