TSMC just lit a fire under the AI trade

Oil's hovering near $90 Iran negotiations are ongoing but nothing's official. And yet... TSMC just posted a 58% profit jump and raised guidance like none of that matters. Because apparently... it doesn't. Here's what they said: Q1 profit hit a record $18.2 billion. Revenue forecast for Q2? $39-40 billion (vs $30 billion last year). Full-year revenue growth? More than 30% (they were saying "close to 30%" before). And they're jacking up capital spending to the high end of $52-56 billion. Translation: AI chip demand is so insane they can't build fabs fast enough. Their 3-nanometer production capacity is maxed out across Taiwan, the U.S., and Japan. And they're not worried about Tesla or Intel trying to compete because — and I'm paraphrasing CEO C.C. Wei here — "there are no shortcuts in this industry." (Read: Good luck building a competitive fab in under 3 years, Elon.) Meanwhile... 3-nm chips now make up 25% of TSMC's revenue (up from 6% in late 2023). Their stock's up 35% this year. Market cap just hit $1.7 trillion — double Samsung's. And their fabs are running so hot analysts are using phrases like "AI story just keeps delivering." But here's the thing... The market's treating this like it's bulletproof. Like Iran doesn't matter. Like the blockade's just background noise. Like peace talks are a done deal even though Trump's military is STILL enforcing sanctions and cutting off Iranian ports. So which is it? Is AI demand strong enough to override geopolitical chaos?
